Crime Victim/Witness Support Volunteer Opportunities

Provider: HOUSE OF RUTH

The agency provides volunteer opportunities to individuals living in the East end of the San Gabriel Valley and the West end of San Bernardino County. Services include child care volunteer opportunities, clerical volunteer opportunities, crime victim/witness support volunteer opportunities, and helpline volunteer opportunities. There are no geographic restrictions.

Child care volunteer opportunities are available as part of the agency's Pomona and Ontario outreach services. Volunteers provide assistance to and are supervised by the agency's licensed child care workers.

Clerical volunteer opportunities include general office clerical work such as data entry and word processing, filing, and answering telephones.

Crime victim/witness support volunteer opportunities include helping victims of domestic violence complete legal paperwork in the agency's Temporary Restraining Order Clinic.

Helpline volunteer opportunities includes providing crisis intervention counseling on the agency's 24 hour hotline. The agency may route the crisis line directly to a volunteer's residence which allows the volunteer to work out of his or her home, or the volunteer may work out of the agency's main location.

All volunteers must complete 40 hours of domestic violence training. Training is provided by the agency and is taught by the agency staff, as well as a police detective and a district attorney. Training classes include domestic violence training, agency history, police response issues, legal and justice system information, child abuse information, diversity training, substance abuse information, information on homeless women and domestic violence, and same sex domestic violence. Volunteers complete tests throughout the training process.

Volunteers must commit to at least 4 hours of service a week for at least 6 months. Once a volunteer completes the training and 6 weeks of volunteer service they receive a domestic violence certificate.

The agency completes background checks and checks references.
