Provider: CITY OF LOS ANGELES DEPARTMENT ON DISABILITY

This office offers funding information, technical assistance, and advocacy for programs that care for people who have HIV/AIDS; works within the city government and community to provide awareness and education about HIV/AIDS; provides information and networking for HIV/AIDS service organizations in the City of Los Angeles; and provides funding and expertise for research into HIV/AIDS risk behaviors, prevention techniques and treatments. The office notifies community agencies about funding made available by the city to HIV/AIDS service organizations, accepts and evaluates proposals from agencies that apply for funding, and makes recommendations to the City Council about which agencies would most benefit from the funds. The office provides statistics and data about HIV/AIDS to the Mayor and City Council that creates greater awareness in the government and acts as an advocate for a human rights policy for people in Los Angeles who have HIV/AIDS or related conditions.

The office, at times, provides small technical assistance grants to workshops and meetings conducted by organizations who are active in the fight to ensure that people who have HIV/AIDS receive the benefits to which they are entitled, people who have expertise about AIDS and who represent specific groups of people who are at risk, and the general public to identify and prioritize the needs and problems of people in the city who have HIV/AIDS as well as the HIV/AIDS-related needs of the public and to establish an HIV/AIDS action agenda for the City Council. The AIDS Coordinator works with other city departments to develop effective means to educate and increase the awareness of the general public about HIV/AIDS and related issues. The office maintains a mailing list of service and education organizations that deal with HIV/AIDS citywide.
